Rockstar Games, a division of Take-Two Interactive Software Inc., is instructing its workforce to return to the office on a full-time basis starting in April. This decision aligns with the final stages of development for the much-anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI.

In a communication sent to employees on Wednesday, as reported by Bloomberg, Rockstar's Head of Publishing, Jenn Kolbe, cited productivity and security concerns as the primary drivers behind the move. The company has faced security breaches, including the unauthorized release of early footage and a leaked trailer for the upcoming Grand Theft Auto game in December.

Kolbe underscored the "tangible benefits" derived from in-person collaboration and asserted that the decision positions the company to deliver the next Grand Theft Auto with the expected level of quality and polish. She emphasized the need for a publishing roadmap that matches the scale and ambition of the game.

The return-to-office mandate reflects an ongoing debate across industries since the pandemic prompted a widespread shift to remote work. While many companies have embraced flexible work arrangements, allowing employees to work from home part-time, Rockstar Games is opting for a more traditional approach.

The discussion around in-person versus remote work has been particularly contentious within the video game industry, given its volatile nature and the absence of a centralized workforce. Notably, major video game hits in 2023, such as Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 developed by Insomniac Games, successfully navigated development in a remote setup.

Rockstar Games' decision to enforce full-time in-office work aligns with a broader trend in the industry, where companies are reassessing their work arrangements in a post-pandemic landscape.
